BRANCOVAN I

Constantin Brancoveanu (1654-1714), Voivod of Walachia since 1688, was created a Hungarian Count on 19-5-1688 and Reichsfürst on 30-1-1695. The family claimed kinship with the former rulers of Walachia from the Bassaraba dynasty which had died out in 1660 and added their surname. With Grigore 5.Reichsfürst Bassaraba de Brancoveanu (+ 1833) the family died out in the male line. Grigore adopted in 1820 a niece of his wife, Zoe Princess Mavrocordato (1805-1892) who took the surname Bassaraba de Brancovan and married in 1825 Gheorghe Demeter Bibesco (1804-1873), Voivod of Walachia 1842-1848. Their son Gregoriu Bibesco (1827-1886) was adopted as well by Grigore and was on 25-2-1860 recognized by Austria as Fürst Brancovan.
Eldest known ancestor of the family Bibesco is a certain Micul Potârcan de Bibesti who was mentioned in 1520.
