The Stacpoole family is mentioned in Ireland since the 12th century. The eldest proven ancestor of the family, Robert Stacpoole, was mentioned in 1647. His great grandson George Stacpoole (1736-1824) was created a count by Louis XVIII King of France on 21-7-1818 because of his wealth. His son Richard Fitzgeorge (de) Stacpoole (1787-1848) lived in Rome and apparently helped restore San Paolo church, the main bridge over the Tiber and the fountains. He was created a papal marquess on 21-2-1826 and duke in May 1831.
