PORTLAND

Eldest ancestor Johan Bentinck, mentioned between 1343 and 1386, lived at Wapenveld near Heerde. His descendant Hans Willem Bentinck (1649-1709) accompanied Willem III of Orange when he became King of England and was created Earl of Portland on 9-4-1689. His eldest son Henry Bentinck was created Duke of Portland on 6-7-1716, but lis line became extinct in 1990 and the earldom of Portland was inherited by a descendant of the second son of Hans Willem.

PORTLAND (PARENTE)

Dutch nobleman Hans Willem Bentinck (1649-1709) was created Earl of Portland on 9-4-1689. His son Henry Bentinck, 2.Earl of Portland (1680-1724) was elevated to the rank of Duke of Portland on 6-7-1715. His son William Bentinck, 2.Duke of Portland (1709-1762) married Lady Margaret Cavendish Harley heiress of the Cavendish Dukes of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, after which their son combined the two surnames. Their lineage became extinct in the male line in 1990, after which a distant cousin Henry Noel Bentinck succeeded in the title Earl of Portland (see that entry). The main properties of the Dukes of Portland, notably Welbeck Abbey, where inherited by a daughter of the 7.Duke.
