HOLY SEE

The Holy See is the universal government of the Catholic Church and operates from the Vatican City State, which was created by the Lateran Treaty of 1929. In 756 the former Byzantine territory of the Duchy of Rome was given by King Pepin of the Franks to the Pope. This formed the core of the so-called Papal States, which existed till 1870, when they were annexed by the Kingdom of Italy.

Léon XIV, un nouveau pape qui n’est pas français… mais presque ! - Geneanet

  1. If https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Prevost-1162 is correct (May 18, 2025) nr. 14. Ferdinand David Baquié was not an actual "mulatto", being a descendant of French distinguished families (one of his great grand fathers was Charles Louis Boucher de Grand Pré, the Spanish governor of the Baton Rouge district (1799–1808) and of Spanish West Florida (1805), among others).
The "mulatto" may be due to the fact that his wife (nr. 15.) Eugenie Grambois was the daughter of the French born druggist Eugène Granbois and the free woman of colour Odile "Adele" Copele (recorded as a slave owner).

    1. I have to correct myself: Ferdinand Baquié's mother, nr. 29 Celeste Lemelle, had her paternal grandmother Marie Jeanne Davion recorded as a free woman of color. Interesting the extensive use of concubinage (plaçage) in French Louisiana.

  2. On the paternal side, being almost ascertained the origin from the town of Milazzo in Sicily, it is interesting to note in the act of marriage of HH paternal great granfather in 1853 (https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12657/an_ua381591/wQPp9jq) that the names are all preceded by the "honorific" "don/donna":
don Santi Riggitano (usciere comunale/municipal usher), son of D. Giuseppe (impiegato/employee) and D.a Concetta Boccafusca, marries d.a Maria Aliota (di professione "civil" / of "civil" condition), daughter of D. Francesco (trafficante/merchant) and D.na Vittora Trusiano.

  3. I am sure that you are now aware that the paternal line is incorrect. The press has the full story which is of much greater interest than the erroneous "Prevosto" story. I have no doubt that you will give us extensive information on the real male line, which "EAR" alludes to above.
