MACDONALD

The Clan Macdonald is one of the largest Scottish clans and forms part of the Clan Donald, named after Domhnall, grandson of warlord Somerled or Somhairle (+ 1164), King of the Isles, of Norse-Gaelic origins. The Chiefs of the Clan Macdonald descend from Aonghas Mór (or Angus the Elder, + 1294/95) son of Domhnall and Lord of Islay. His grandson John of Islay or Macdonald (+ 1386) was the first to use the title Lord of the Isles. He married Princess Margaret of Scotland, daughter of King Robert II. The main line who ruled as independent Lords of The Isles ended in 1490. A bastard line continued as the Macdonalds of Sleat, Isle of Skye. Hugh (Uisdean) Macdonald of Sleat (1437-1498) was an illegitimate son of Alexander Macdonald, Earl of Ross and Lord of the Isles. His descendant Donald Macdonald was created a Baronet in 1625. His descendant Alexander Macdonald, 9.Bt. (ca. 1745-1795) was created Baron Macdonald (in the peerage of England) on 25-7-1776. He married Diana Elizabeth Bosville, after which his son Godfrey combined the two surnames in Bosville-Macdonald. He married in 1803 Louisa La Coast, illegitimate daughter of Prince William Henry of Great Britain, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh. After which his titles went separate ways, as his eldest son Alexander was born before the wedding and could not inherit the Barony according to English law, which went to his younger brother. Alexanders descendants did however inherit (ultimately) the baronetcy, chieftainship and Bosville estates.
