Eldest ancestor Miklós Salamon was mentioned in 1242. His descendant Benedek Zerhas de Zerhashaz (+ 1553) married Ilona Bessenyay de Galántha and changed his surname into Eszterhas de Galántha. Their grandson Miklós Esterházy de Galántha (1583-1645) was created a Baron in 1613 and Reichsgraf on 24-6-1626. His son Pál Graf Esterházy v. Galántha (1635-1713) was created a Reichsfürst on 7-12-1687. His descendant Miklós 7.Fürst Esterházy v. Galántha (1765-1833) became in 1804 sovereign lord of Edelstetten (bought from the Prince de Ligne who had received the former Abbey in 1803 as compensation for the loss of Fagnolles), which was mediatised in 1806 as part of Bavaria. SAPIEHA-ROŻAŃSKI

First certain ancestor Semen Sopiha was mentioned between 1440 and 1449 as secretary of King Kazimierz IV of Poland. His sons Bogdan (+ 1512) and Iwan (+ ca. 1517) start the two lines of family; Sapieha-Rożański and Sapieha-Kodeński. Iwans grandson Mikolaj Sapieha (1526-1599) was created Reichsgraf on 6-1-1572. Joachim Murat (1767-1815), brother-in-law of Emperor Napeleón and considered 1st Prince Murat, was created Duke of Berg on 15-3-1806 and Grandduke of Berg on 1-8-1806 until he became King of Naples on 15-7-1808. He was deposed on 19-5-1815. His second son Lucien Murat (1803-1878) was Prince of Pontecorvo from 1812 till 1815. Eldest ancestor Pierre Murat died on 20-9-1706 in Labastide-Fortunière. 1. Eldest ancestor Turchetil Lord of Tourville died after 1024. His son Anchetil was the first Lord of Harcourt. Jean IV d'Harcourt (+ 1346) was created a Count in March 1338. The eldest line of the family died out in 1424. A grandson of the first Count, Philippe d'Harcourt (1353/54-1403) married Jeanne de Tilly, Lady of Beaufou and Beuvron. Their grandson Jacques d'Harcourt (+ 1487) became Baron de Beuvron and his descendant Pierre d'Harcourt (1550-1627) was created Marquis de Beuvron in August 1593. Sophia Gräfin Chotek v. Chotkowa u. Wognin (1868-1914), the morganatic wife of the Austrian heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was created Fürstin v. Hohenberg on 1-7-1900 and Herzogin v. Hohenberg ad personam on 4-10-1909 and hereditary 31-8-1917. As descendants of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty, the family descends from Adalbert Count of Metz and Chatenois (+ 1033/37), whose grandson Adalbert Count of Metz (+ 1048) was appointed Duke of (Upper) Lorraine in 1047. RUSSIA

In 1547 Ivan IV the Terrible Grandduke of Moscow (1530-1584) took the title of Tsar and Grandduke of the entire Rus and started the conquests that made Russia the leading power in Eastern Europe and nothern Asia. Through his grandmother Sophia Palaeologina, niece of the last Byzantine Emperor Constantinos XI, Ivan IV became the successor of the Eastern Roman tradition. With his son Feodor his line died out in 1598. In 1613 nobleman Mikhail Romanov (1596-1645) was elected Tsar. His descendant Peter I the Great Tsar of All the Russias (1672-1725) modernised the country and founded the new capital Saint Petersburg. With his grandson Peter II the Romanov dynasty died out in 1730. Peter I´s daughter Elisaveta I was the last ruling Romanov until 1761, after which her nephew Karl Peter Ulrich Duke of Holstein-Gottorp (1728-1762) acceeded the throne as Peter III.
