The eldest ancestor of the ancient French noble family Rohan is Guethenoc de Porhoët, Viscount of Rennes, who is mentioned between 990 and 1032. His great grandson Alain le Noir is the first Viscount of Rohan. Descendants in the main line became Prince de Guéméné in 1570 and Duc de Montbazon ca. 1585. Through the marriage of Jules de Rohan, 7.Duc de Montbazon, Prince de Guéméné (1726-1800) with Marie Louise de La Tour d'Auvergne, the rights on the sovereign duchy of Bouillon where inherited by the Rohan family in 1816. Their son Henri (1745-1809) was created on 17-6-1808 Fürst v. Rohan(-Guéméné) in Austria. With his second son Louis Victor Meriadec 3.Fürst v. Rohan his line died out in 1846. Heir was his distant cousin Camille 4.Fürst v. Rohan (1800-1892), son of Charles de Rohan, Prince de Rochefort (created ca. 1760) et Montauban (created ca. 1745), and Marie Louise de Rohan, daughter of Henri 1.Fürst v. Rohan. The present members descend from his brother Benjamin.
