WEDEL-JARLSBERG

In 1683 Gustav Wilhelm v. Wedel (1641-1717) received the Grevskabet Jarlsberg (created in 1673). Jarlsberg and Laurvik where the only two Norwegian Grevskaber, of which Laurvig was already abolished in 1817. The Grevskabet Jarlsberg was abolished in 1893, but Jarlsberg still belongs to the Wedel family.
The eldest ancestor was a certain Heinrich, mentioned in 1149 as Vogt of the convent Neumünster. His descendant Gustav Wilhelm v. Wedel had properties in East Friesland and was a Danish marshall and governor of Oldenburg, created Count on 8-1-1684. His eldest son Georg Ernst inherited the Norwegian properties and the second Erhard Frederik the ones in East Friesland.

  1. Very interesting! I wonder if my Wedel German ancestors were in any way related. They emigrated to Russia in the 19th century (I think). I see the name in Poland as well (the chocolate company). What, exactly, does Grevskabet Jarlsberg mean?

  2. Thank you for your comment. Grevskabet means county, an area ruled by a count.
