HAMILTON AND BRANDON

Eldest ancestor William of Douglas was mentioned between 1174 and 1213. His descendant William Douglas (+ 1384) was created Earl of Douglas in 1358 and had with Margaret Stewart, dowager Countess of Angus and Mar, an illegitimate son, George Douglas (1380-1403), created Earl of Angus in 1389. He married Princess Mary of Scotland, daughter of King Robert III. Their descendant William Douglas, 11.Earl of Angus (1589-1660) was created Marquess of Douglas in 1633. His great grandson Archibald Douglas, 4.Marquess of Douglas (1694-1761) was created Duke of Douglas in 1703, but died childless. A younger son of the 1.Marquess of Douglas, William Douglas (1634-1694), was created Earl of Selkirk in 1646. He married in 1656 Anne Hamilton, 3.Duchess of Hamilton (created 1643). Their son James, who took the surname of his mother, 4.Duke of Hamilton (1658-1712) was created Duke of Brandon in 1711. The present Duke descends from a younger son of the 4.Duke, as an elder branch died out in 1895. the family changed their surname to Douglas-Hamilton in the 19th century.
