The Bagrationi are probably the most ancient European noble family and trace their ancestry to Armenian nobles who lived in the 3rd century. Possibly Bagarata, a general of King Tigranes the Great of Armenia (+ 56 BC) is their oldest ancestor. In the 9th century the family became Kings of Armenia (until 1045) and Iberia, which was united with the kingdom of Abkhazeti and named Georgia after King Giorgi I (+ 1027). In the 13th century the country was split in the kingdoms of Imereti, Kakheti and Kartli. The last two were only reunited in 1762 by King Irakli II. Only to be annexed by Russia in 1800. Imereti was ceded to Russia by its last King Solomon II in 1810.
The line of the Kings of Georgia (Kakheti and Kartli) was believed to be extinct with the death of Aleksandré Mikhailovitch Prince Grouzinsky in 1931 and Prince Giorgi Alexandrovitch Bagration-Moukhransky of a junior line claimed the headship of the Royal House of Georgia. The last Prince Imeretinsky died in 1978. However after the fall of communism it became clear that descendants of Irakli II had survived in Georgia. The senior male representative is Nugzar Petrovitch Prince Grouzinsky. In 2009 the two main royal lines joined through the marriage of David Giorgievitch Prince Bagration-Moukhransky and Anna, the elder of the two daughters of Nugzar.

We have a handwritten letter and russian notes given to my Grandad when serving in the Engliah cavalry in Jerusalem and dated 1944, it is written and signed by Prince Michael N Grouzinsky. How would we find out more about him?
ReplyDeleteBurke´s Royal Families of the World Vol. II mentions on page 68 a Mikhail Nikolaievitch Prince Grouzinsky who was born on 28-11/10-12-1886 and married a lady Brojozovska. No more details are given, just that he went into exile.
ReplyDeleteApparently he died in Jeruzalem on January 1st 1945, source a newspaper clipping, acessible through ancestry.com.
