SPAIN

The Kingdom of Spain in its present form and name dates basically back to 1469 when Fernando II King of Aragón married Isabel I Queen of Castilla and León. They reconquered in 1492 Granada as last muslim part of the peninsula.
The daughter and heiress of Fernando and Isabel, Juana la Loca, married Philipp of Habsburg Archduke of Austria and heir to the Netherlands. Their son was as Charles V Emperor of Germany and as Carlos I King of Spain and ruler of the Netherlands and extensive territories in the Americas. In 1700 the Habsburg dynasty died out, sparking the War of the Spanish Succession, which ended with a grandson of Louis XIV King of France and descendant in the female line of the Habsburgs being accepted as Felipe V King of Spain.
