After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the First World War the Middle East was divided by The United Kingdom and France based on the Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916 in which Syria fell under French influence and Iraq and Palestine under British. The Amirate of Transjordan was split of from Palestine in 1921 and given to Abdullah ibn Husain (1881-1951), younger son of Husain ibn Ali al-Hussein Grand Sharif of Mecca and newly proclaimed King of the Hijaz in 1916. Transjordan became independent from Britain on 22-5-1946 and Abdullah took the title King of Transjordan on 25-5-1946. On 17-6-1946 the name of the country was changed to Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The Hashemite dynasty descends from the Prophet Mohammed (570-632) through his daughter Fatima married with her cousin Ali ibn Abu Talib, 4th Caliph, with as eldest proven ancestor Arab chieftain Quraysh. The descendants of Hassan, the eldest son of Ali and Fatima, known as Sharifs, ruled the holy city of Mecca between 1201 and 1925 (since 1517 under Ottoman sovereignty). Husain ibn Ali al-Hussein Grand Sharif of Mecca (1853/54-1931) and his sons supported the British against the Ottomans. He was created King of the Hijaz. He abdicated in 1924. His eldest son Ali succeeded him, but Hijaz was annexed by Saudiarabia in 1925. Second son Abdullah received Transjordan in 1921 and youngest son Faisal was briefly King of Syria in 1920 and became in 1921 King of Iraq. His grandson Faisal II was murdered in 1958.
