The present (Russian) Dukes of Leuchtenberg are a morganatic branch of the German Dukes of Leuchtenberg. A title created on 14-11-1817 for Eugène Vicomte de Beauharnais (1781-1824) jointly with that of Fürst v. Eichstätt, stepson of Emperor Napeoleon and son-in-law of the first King of Bavaria. He had been Viceroy of Italy since 1805 and Hereditary Grandduke of Frankfurt since 1810. Both until 1814. His eldest son Auguste was in 1831 candidate for the Belgian throne, but the Duc de Nemours was elected. Auguste married the Maria da Gloria Queen of Portugal in 1835, but died the same year. Younger son Maximilian 3.Herzog v. Leuchtenberg (1817-1852) married Grandduchess Maria Nikolaievna of Russia. Their children were recognized as Princes Romanowsky on 6/18-12-1852 with the qualification Imperial Highness. The two eldest sons, Nikolai and Eugen, married morganatically. Nikolai´s sons were created Dukes of Leuchtenberg in Russia on 11/23-11-1890. The youngest son Georg continued the imperial line. His son Sergei was the last male representative and died in 1974.
The Beauharnais family descends from a Guillaume Beauharnais, seigneur de Miramion and La Chaussée, who married 28-1-1390 Marguerite de Bourges.
