This blog presents the ancestors of the heirs of the leading families of Europe. These overviews represent the changing character of these families regarding marriage policy and show on one hand the close connections between those families but on the other hand the ability to absorb new influences while maintaining continuity. The texts are mainly in Dutch, later I will change it to English, but I think the information is clear enough. © Ronald Elward 2009-2024

MONTENEGRO
Montenegro has been since the 16th century a small autonomous state within the Ottoman Empire ruled by prince-bishops (vladikas). In 1696 Danilo Petrovič-Nyegoš (1675-1735) became the first ruler of his dynasty. The eldest ancestor Yerak fled for the Turks in the middle of the 15th century from Herzegovina to Montenegro. Danilo II was the last vladika and became Prince of Montenegro on 8-1-1852. He was murdered in 1860 and succeeded by his nephew Nikola, who became King of Montenegro on 28-8-1910. Montenegro was annexed by Serbia on 13-11-1918 and remained part of Yugoslavia/Serbia until 3-6-2006. The dynasty was rehabilitated by law on 12-7-2011
